Plusieurs associations islamiques s’expriment en soutien à la Palestine

Le Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) s’est exprimé à travers son président général, le Sultan de Sokoto pour le cessez-le-feu, et en soutien à la Palestine. Bien qu’il ait appelé à la paix, il a largement condamné les États-Unis et Israël pour avoir nourri le sentiment d’injustice et traité les Palestiniens selon ses termes comme des « sous-Hommes ».  Il n’a pas hésité à comparer la politique israélienne avec le régime d’Apartheid, en rappelant l’opposition du Nigeria à l’époque.

Par ailleurs, plusieurs groupes musulmans tels que Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) ou le Muslim Awareness International (MAI) ont organisé un rassemblement au Centre Dawah à Ijesha (Lagos) pour exprimer leur soutien à la Palestine et ont prié pour la paix au Moyen-Orient. La plupart des dirigeants ont exprimé leur solidarité avec la Palestine, indiquant que l’attaque du Hamas –qualifié de « combattant de la liberté » – était une réaction à une injustice endémique causée depuis 75 ans par Israël et l’ONU. La réunion est restée calme et n'a pas déclenché de violence.

Several Islamic associations speak out in support of Palestine

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has spoken through its President General, the Sultan of Sokoto for the cease-the-fire but in support of Palestine. Although he called for peace, he widely condemned the United States and Israel for fueling a sense of injustice and treating Palestinians, in his words, as "sub-human." He did not hesitate to compare Israeli policy with the Apartheid regime, recalling Nigeria's opposition at the time.

Furthermore, several Muslim groups such as Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) and Muslim Awareness International (MAI) organized a rally at the Dawah Center in Ijesha (Lagos) to express their support for Palestine and prayed for peace in the Middle East. Most leaders expressed solidarity with Palestine, saying the attack by Hamas - described as a "freedom fighter" - was a reaction to endemic injustice caused for 75 years by Israel and the UN. The meeting remained calm and did not spark violence.

La Christian Association of Nigeria appelle Israël et la Palestine à dialogue

La Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) a appelé à l'arrêt immédiat des hostilités entre Israël et la Palestine, exhortant les deux parties à engager le dialogue pour préserver la vie humaine. Le président de la CAN, l'archevêque Daniel Okoh, a exprimé son inquiétude face au conflit en cours, compte tenu des pertes en vies humaines et des destructions. Il a fermement condamné tous les actes de violence quels qu’en soient les coupables soulignant le caractère sacré de la vie humaine et les principes de justice et de paix défendus par la foi chrétienne. Il a appelé à des prières pour la paix, l'unité et la résolution du conflit israélo-palestinien.

CAN advises Israel and  Palestine to embrace dialogue

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called for an immediate end to hostilities between Israel and Palestine, urging both sides to engage in dialogue to preserve human life. CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, has expressed concern over the ongoing conflict, given the loss of life and destruction. He strongly condemned all acts of violence, regardless of the perpetrators, emphasizing the sacred nature of human life and the principles of justice and peace defended by the Christian faith. He called for prayers for peace, unity and resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Des pèlerins chrétiens rapatriés de Terre-Sainte à la suite des attaques en Israël

Le gouverneur de Lagos a assuré que plus de trois cents pèlerins avaient été rapatriés suite aux attaques commises par le Hamas au sud d’Israël. Ce rapatriement a été coordonné par le conseiller aux affaires chrétiennes de l’État de Lagos, lequel est en charge d’organiser deux fois par an un pèlerinage en Terre-Sainte. Cette pratique est largement répandue dans la plupart des États nigérians tant pour les croyants chrétiens que musulmans. 

Christian Pilgrims were repatriated following the attacks in Israel

The governor of Lagos assured that more than three hundred pilgrims had been repatriated following attacks by Hamas in southern Israel. This repatriation was coordinated by the Lagos State Christian Affairs Advisor, who is responsible for organizing a pilgrimage to the Holy Land twice a year. This practice is widespread in most Nigerian states for both Christian and Muslim believers.

L’élection du Gouverneur de Nasarawa remise en cause sur fond de tensions interreligieuses

Abdullahi Sule, du parti présidentiel APC (All Progressive Congress) a été déclaré vainqueur par la Commission Electorale Indépendante (INEC) aux élections au poste de gouverneur. Cette élection a été contestée par le PDP (People's Democratic Party) qui a fait un recours au tribunal : celui-ci a confirmé les accusations de fraude et a indiqué que David Ombugadu, candidat PDP, devait être considéré vainqueur, ce que Sule a refusé en faisant appel.

Cette polémique entre les deux grandes écuries politiciennes nigérianes s’ancre dans le religieux : l’APC est accusée par une organisation de la société civile de diffuser l’idée selon laquelle le tribunal dont les membres seraient chrétiens d’être de mèche avec Ombugadu, seul candidat chrétien. De la même manière, cette polémique résonne avec les accusations de projet de domination musulmane de l’APC symbolisé par le « Muslim-Muslim ticket ».

The election of the Governor of Nasarawa questioned against a backdrop of interreligious tensions

Abdullahi Sule of the presidential party APC has been declared winner by the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) in the governorship elections. This election was contested by the PDP which appealed to the court: it confirmed the accusations of fraud and indicated that David Ombugadu, PDP candidate, should be considered the winner, which Sule refused by appealing.

This controversy between the two major Nigerian political stables is rooted in religion: the APC is accused by a civil society organization of spreading the idea according to which the court, whose members are Christians, is in cahoots with Ombugadu, only Christian candidate. In the same way, this controversy resonates with the accusations of the APC's project of Muslim domination symbolized by the “Muslim-Muslim ticket”.

1 800 couples mariés lors d’un mariage de masse à Kano

Compte tenu des difficultés économiques et de l’impossibilité des jeunes d’assumer les coûts relatifs au mariage (cérémonie, dot…), le gouvernorat de Kano a organisé un mariage de masse qui a rassemblé des centaines de couples. Ceux-ci se sont mariés à la mosquée de Kano avant d’être reçus à la résidence du gouverneur. Tous les frais relatifs aux mariages ont été pris en charge par les autorités. Cette cérémonie gigantesque intervient dans l’État conservateur de Kano qui vise à maintenir ses structures traditionnelles et à répondre aux aspirations sociales de sa jeunesse touchée de plein fouet par une crise économique brutale. Point non-négligeable, les jeunes couples se sont engagés à présenter leurs différends devant le Hisbah Board, police islamique, sans l’accord de qui, ils ne pourront divorcer à l’avenir.

1 800 couples married in a mass wedding in Kano

Given the economic difficulties and the inability of young people to bear the costs relating to marriage (ceremony, dowry, etc.), the governorate of Kano organized a mass wedding which brought together hundreds of couples. They were married at the Kano mosque before being received at the governor's residence. All costs relating to the weddings were covered by the authorities. This gigantic ceremony takes place in the conservative state of Kano which aims to maintain its traditional structures and respond to the social aspirations of its youth hit hard by a brutal economic crisis. Not insignificant, the young couples have undertaken to present their differences before the Hisbah Board, Islamic police, without whose agreement, they will not be able to divorce in the future.

L’armée de l’air nigériane a effectué des frappes dans l’État de Zamfara situé dans le Nord-Ouest du pays. Ces frappes visaient des groupes de bandits suite à l’obtention de renseignements avec un bilan supposé d’une centaine de morts selon des militaires nigérians. Les données restent difficiles à vérifier et les circonstances floues, alors que des projets d’attaques de plus grande échelle étaient prêtés à cette colonne. 

Airstrikes in Zamfara State and a toll difficult to define

The Nigerian Air Force carried out strikes in Zamfara State located in the northwest of the country. These strikes targeted groups of bandits following the obtaining of information with a supposed death toll of around a hundred according to Nigerian soldiers. The data remains difficult to verify and the circumstances unclear, while plans for larger-scale attacks were attributed to this column.

Une église évangélique rend hommage à une femme musulmane pour son engagement à Kaduna

L’église Christ Evangelical and Life Intervention Ministry de Kaduna a rendu hommage à Hajiya Ramatu Tijjani pour ses contributions humanitaires dans la promotion de la paix, de la tolérance interreligieuse et de l'aide aux victimes de diverses crises, dans le but de favoriser la coexistence pacifique dans la région du nord. Hajiya Ramatu a généreusement fourni des vêtements et de la nourriture à des centaines de veuves et d'orphelins sans tenir compte de leur appartenance religieuse. Elle a joué un rôle important en encourageant les femmes à s'engager dans des pratiques de consolidation de la paix et de tolérance entre différents groupes confessionnels. Cette action a été particulièrement soulignée alors que les lignes de fractures ethno-religieuses semblent se renforcer dans l’État de Kaduna.

An evangelical church honors Muslim woman for humanitarian contributions

The Christ Evangelical and Life Intervention Ministry in Kaduna has honored Hajiya Ramatu Tijjani for her endless intervention and humanitarian contributions in promoting peace, inter-religious tolerance, and providing aid to victims of various crises, with the aim of foster peace coexistence in the Northern region. Hajiya Ramatu has generously been providing clothing and food to hundreds of Christian widows and orphans in respective of her religion. She has played a significant role in encouraging women to engage in peace-building practice and tolerance among different faith-based groups. This action has been especially highlighted as ethnoreligious tensions have notoriously spread in Kaduna State.

Le protagonisme des femmes dans le banditisme est croissant dans le Nord-Ouest du Nigeria

Le Courrier International relaie un papier publié par ISS Africa en août 2023 sur l’implication croissante des femmes dans le banditisme dans le Nord-Ouest du Nigeria. Cette région a connu sur les dernières années une multiplication des actes de banditisme avec la prolifération de cellules délinquantes de tailles et moyens différents. Celles-ci se prêtent à toutes sortes d’activités violentes (kidnappings, vols de bétail, assassinats…) et meurtrières, alors que les États nigérians et nigériens semblent incapables de juguler la tendance. Ces cellules sont parfois affiliées à des réseaux terroristes internationaux tels qu’Al Qaida et il semble que de plus en plus de combattants sahéliens rejoignent ces groupes. L’implication croissante des femmes est aujourd’hui certaine : souvent marginalisées économiquement, elles sont captées par ces groupes qui les utilisent pour transporter armes et autres produits illicites ou pour informer. Ce modus operandi inspiré des méthodes de Boko Haram pose de nouveaux enjeux car sur le plan sécuritaire, les forces de sécurité nigériane disposent de peu d’effectifs féminins pour effectuer les contrôles, et sur le plan social, les autorités semblent sans réponse pour limiter l’engagement des femmes dans ces groupes.

The protagonism of women in banditry is growing in North-West Nigeria

Le Courrier International relays a paper published by ISS Africa in August 2023 on the growing involvement of women in banditry in North-West Nigeria. This region has seen an increase in acts of banditry in recent years with the proliferation of criminal cells of different sizes and means. These lend themselves to all kinds of violent and murderous activities (kidnapping, cattle theft, assassinations, etc.), while the Nigerian states seem incapable of curbing the trend. These cells are sometimes affiliated with international terrorist networks such as Al Qaeda and it seems that more and more Sahelian fighters are joining these groups. The growing involvement of women is now certain: often economically marginalized, they are captured by these groups who use them to transport weapons and other illicit products or to provide information. This modus operandi inspired by the methods of Boko Haram poses new challenges because on the security level, the Nigerian security forces have few female personnel to carry out checks, and on the social level, the authorities seem to have no response to limit the women's involvement in these groups.

Un séminaire pour encourager l’implication des femmes dans la résolution des conflits

Lors d'un symposium intitulé « le rôle des femmes comme médiatrices dans la consolidation de la paix et la réconciliation » organisé par One Percent International Management and Advocacy Initiative, des militants ont plaidé pour l'inclusion des femmes dans le processus de consolidation de la paix et dans la cohésion nationale. L'ambassadrice de la paix des Nations Unies, Adaora Onyechere, a déclaré que l'objectif du symposium était de donner aux femmes les moyens de participer activement en tant que médiatrices dans un monde confronté à de nombreux défis et conflits. Elle a souligné l'importance de la participation des femmes au processus de paix pour l'unité nationale.

A seminar to encourage the involvement of women in peacebuilding in Nigeria

In a symposium titled "The Role of Women in Peace Building as Mediators and in Reconciliation" organized by one Percent International Management and Advocacy Initiative, militants have advocated for the inclusion of women in the peace-building process and national cohesion. The United Nations Ambassador of Peace, Adaora Onyechere, stated that the aim of the symposium was to empower women to actively participate as mediators in a world facing numerous challenges and conflicts. She emphasized on the importance of women's involvement in peace process for national unity.
